Senior researchers Arnold Berstad and assistant doctor Jørgen Valeur from Lovisenberg Diakonale Hospital in the latest issue of The Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association say that it's because, the sugar in sweet foods stimulates a reflex that expands your stomach.
They state,
If you eat dessert after you’re actually feeling stuffed you’re tricking your normal sensation of being full,
Sweets expand your stomach, allowing you to eat after you’re full. This is why we eat dessert last and why companies add sugar to nearly everything.
