The 1960 US Presidential Race is recognized in history as the United States' first commercial election. It was quite special for one specific reason: television. Just one ad from the democratic party was able to strongly influence who the next president was going to be, something a bit unprecedented at the time. For many historians, CBS's decision to televise the presidential debate between Nixon and Kennedy changed American elections forever. This was the year TV had started to have a huge influence on politics and where the image of the president mattered just as if not more than what they said. It was the year when politics became a passion, took its place next to entertainment, and stopped being boring.
